Your recurring expenses

Why work this out

This is the part of your money that’s already spoken for before the month starts. Once you know how much it is, you know what’s left for everything else.

The ones people forget

Insurance, annual fees, car servicing, domain names and subscriptions that renew themselves. Go through twelve months of bank statements and they’ll all turn up.

How the math works

We turn each payment into its yearly cost and divide by twelve. A weekly payment is multiplied by 52, one every two months by 6, a quarterly one by 4 and a monthly one by 12.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend on fixed expenses?

A common benchmark is no more than 50% of your income, as in the 50/30/20 rule. If you’re well above that, housing, insurance and subscriptions make the biggest difference.

What do I do with a big annual bill?

Find its monthly cost in this calculator and set that amount aside every month. When the bill arrives, the money’s already there.
